Toni's Kitchen works to fight hunger and foster the independence of those in need in our community through a variety of services:

Soup Kitchen

Toni’s Kitchen is best known for our soup kitchen where we serve nutritious, homemade meals.  Anywhere from 65-85 guests gather during the meal and find a warm welcome by volunteers and staff.   Guests are served at their tables, restaurant style, allowing time to relax and enjoy the friendship and companionship of a shared meal.

We use this opportunity of a shared meal to establish strong relationships and address the underlying issues that give rise to food insecurity.   This work is done through our community partners whom we invite on-site to integrate needed services within an environment that feels safe and supportive.

Community Outreach

Poverty in families can be especially devastating.  Toni's Kitchen connects with low-income families in the community through tutoring programs, mentoring and counseling groups, summer camps, and working with other meal provider programs.  We have developed an extensive backpack program to provide healthy food at these gatherings to help improve family nutrition while preserving respect and dignity.

In 2018, Toni's Kitchen provided 13,860 backpacks, pantry bags and produce bags as part of our outreach programs.  Combined with our onsite meals and assistance to other meal provider programs, Toni's Kitchen distributed the equivalent of 179,173 meals to the community in 2018.

Healthy Backpacks

Toni’s Kitchen provides backpacks filled with healthy foods to families with food need.  We do this through community partnerships with tutoring programs, early childhood centers, school aftercare programs, and other partners who provide strong programs for families.  When children leave to go home, they take with them a backpack that looks like any other school backpack.  Inside, they find healthy items such as oatmeal, tuna, peanut butter, raisins, rice, beans, etc.  Empty backpacks are returned each week and a freshly packed one goes home again.  For some programs, we provide a second weekly backpack that is filled with fresh fruits and vegetables.  FInd out more about our Healthy Backpack Program here.

Wellness

Toni’s Kitchen provides a growing number of health and wellness services.  We have increasingly focused on self-management of health and nutrition.  To help our guests' health, we provide resources and connections to help them manage their issues and work to improve their health.

Toni's Kitchen also provides free, regular screenings for blood pressure and glucose levels for our guests, as well as foot care and general wellness assessments.  We also offer a gentle exercise program for guests.  Access to regular healthcare supports independent living, provides earlier intervention, and helps prevent unnecessary visits to hospital emergency rooms.

Clothing

We welcome donations of coats, gloves, underwear, socks, and other clothes for our guests.  We also accept donations of toiletries and person care items like shampoo, soap, and toothpaste.  Our community is most generous and we are able to provide our guests with these items regularly at the end of meals.  While these are items we sometimes take for granted, they make a huge difference.  For some, it is matter of keeping feet warm and dry in the winter.  For others, it is having the personal care items needed to keep a job.  For some of our seniors, these items shave precious dollars off their monthly costs.

Summer Food Programs

During summer, families with children who receive subsidized lunch get hit with a double whammy–having to pay more for food and needing to cover child care as well.  Toni's Kitchen works with summer programs in our community to provide healthy food to families during the summer.

Toni's Kitchen Gardens

In our small but productive gardens, we grow vegetables and herbs to add to the meals that we prepare for our guests.  One of our gardens is located in a space that has been donated by HomeCorp, a longtime supporter of Toni’s Kitchen.  HomeCorp works to provide affordable housing in Montclair and promote neighborhood development.  We also have beautiful gardens on site at Toni’s Kitchen that we use to grow herbs and produce for our meals.
